Appropriate Clients for Rehabilitation

Appropriate clients:

  1. function at Level 6+ on the Rancho Los Amigos Scale of Cognitive Levels
  2. have TBI, stroke, brain tumor survivors, developmental disability
  3. are able to learn new data
  4. are motivated to improve
  5. are relatively free of secondary gain
  6. are free of persistent agitation & severe memory deficits
  7. have a supportive environment
  8. are free from misuse of alcohol or drugs
  9. have cognitive and physical conditions that cause impairment with occupation and/or social function

Inappropriate clients are those functioning below level 4 on the Ranchos Los Amigos Scale and those who are moderately to severely mentally retarded.

Rancho Los Amigos Scale of Cognitive Levels

  • Level I - no response: unresponsive to all stimuli
  • Level II - generalized: inconsistent, non-purposeful reactions
  • Level III - localized response: inconsistent reaction directly related to type of stimuli
  • Level IV - confused, agitated: disoriented and unaware of present events with frequent bizarre and inappropriate behavior; attention span short
  • Level V - confused, inappropriate, nonagitated: nonpurposeful, random responses when task complexity exceeds abilities.
  • Level VI - confused, appropriate: behavior is goal oriented, responses are appropriate; incorrect behaviors result from memory difficulties.
  • Level VII - automatic, appropriate: correct routine responses that are robot-like; oriented but poor insight, judgement.
  • Level VIII - purposeful, appropriate: correct responses, carryover of new learning, no supervision needed; poor tolerance for stress, and some abstract reasoning difficulties.
